ZWILCH

Description

The ZWILCH (zwilch kinetochore protein) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 15.

ZWILCH is a crucial part of the mitotic checkpoint, a critical system that stops cells from prematurely exiting mitosis. This protein ensures proper chromosome segregation during cell division. ZWILCH plays a key role in assembling two essential complexes, dynein-dynactin and MAD1-MAD2, onto kinetochores. These complexes are essential for attaching chromosomes to the spindle fibers and for regulating the mitotic checkpoint. ZWILCH‘s function in spindle assembly is thought to depend on its presence in the RZZ complex, a protein complex crucial for mitosis.

ZWILCH is also known as KNTC1AP, hZwilch.
