ZNF521
Description
The ZNF521 (zinc finger protein 521) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 18.
ZNF521 functions as a transcription factor, capable of both activating and repressing gene expression depending on the cellular context. It plays a role in BMP signaling, regulating the immature hematopoietic system. Upon BMP2 stimulation, ZNF521 associates with SMAD proteins, activating the transcription of BMP target genes. Conversely, ZNF521 acts as a transcriptional repressor by interacting with EBF1, a transcription factor essential for B-cell lineage specification. This interaction prevents EBF1 from binding DNA and activating its target genes.
