ZFPM1

Description

The ZFPM1 (zinc finger protein, FOG family member 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.

ZFPM1, also known as Friend of GATA protein 1 (FOG-1), is a protein encoded by the ZFPM1 gene in humans. It acts as a cofactor for the GATA1 transcription factor.

ZFPM1 is a transcription regulator vital for the differentiation of erythroid and megakaryocytic cells. It functions as an essential cofactor, forming heterodimers with GATA family transcription factors (GATA1, GATA2, and GATA3). This interaction can either activate or repress gene expression, depending on the cellular and promoter context. The heterodimer with GATA proteins is crucial for activating genes like NFE2, ITGA2B, alpha- and beta-globin, while repressing KLF1 expression. ZFPM1 may also regulate gene expression in gonads and contribute to cardiac development in a non-redundant manner with ZFPM2/FOG2.

ZFPM1 is also known as FOG, FOG1, ZC2HC11A, ZNF408, ZNF89A.
