Description

The VTA1 (vesicle trafficking 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

VTA1, or Vacuolar protein sorting-associated protein VTA1 homolog, is a protein encoded by the VTA1 gene in humans.

VTA1 plays a crucial role in the endosomal multivesicular body (MVB) pathway. MVBs are responsible for the formation of intraluminal vesicles (ILVs) by invaginating and then detaching from the endosome membrane. These ILVs primarily travel to lysosomes, where they facilitate the breakdown of membrane proteins, including activated growth factor receptors, lysosomal enzymes, and lipids. VTA1 is believed to work in conjunction with VPS4A/B, enzymes that dismantle membrane-associated ESCRT-III complexes. It contributes to the sorting and downregulation of EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) and participates in the budding process of HIV-1.
