Description

The VKORC1 gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called vitamin K epoxide reductase complex subunit 1. This enzyme plays a crucial role in the activation of vitamin K, a nutrient essential for blood clotting. Vitamin K is necessary for the synthesis of several proteins involved in coagulation, including prothrombin. VKORC1 converts vitamin K epoxide to its active form, vitamin K hydroquinone, allowing it to participate in the carboxylation of clotting factors. This process is critical for proper blood clotting and preventing excessive bleeding.
