ULBP3

Description

The ULBP3 (UL16 binding protein 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

ULBP3 is a cell surface glycoprotein encoded by the ULBP3 gene on chromosome 6. It is related to MHC class I molecules but lacks the α3 domain and transmembrane segment, instead being anchored to the cell membrane by a GPI anchor. ULBP3 functions as a stress-induced ligand for the NKG2D receptor.

ULBP3 binds to and activates the KLRK1/NKG2D receptor, triggering natural killer cell cytotoxicity. This interaction has been experimentally demonstrated (PubMed:11491531, PubMed:11754823, PubMed:11777960).

ULBP3 is also known as N2DL-3, NKG2DL3, RAET1N.
