ULBP1

Description

The ULBP1 (UL16 binding protein 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

ULBP1 is a cell surface glycoprotein encoded by the ULBP1 gene located on chromosome 6. While related to MHC class I molecules, ULBP1 maps outside the MHC locus and lacks the α3 domain and transmembrane segment found in conventional MHC class I molecules. Its structure consists solely of the α1α2 domain, anchored to the cell membrane by a GPI anchor. ULBP1 acts as a stress-induced ligand for the NKG2D receptor and is upregulated during HCMV infection. HCMV-encoded UL16 glycoprotein binding to ULBP1 interferes with ULBP1's cell surface localization, providing another mechanism for HCMV-infected cells to evade the immune system.

ULBP1 is also known as N2DL-1, NKG2DL1, RAET1I.
