TUBB6

Description

The TUBB6 (tubulin beta 6 class V) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 18.

TUBB6 encodes a beta-tubulin isoform that is a major component of microtubules. Microtubules are dynamic structures that are essential for a variety of cellular processes, including cell division, intracellular transport, and cell shape maintenance. TUBB6, along with its alpha-tubulin counterpart, forms heterodimers that assemble into protofilaments, which in turn form the hollow cylindrical structure of microtubules. The addition of GTP-bound tubulin dimers to the microtubule end, known as the plus end, drives microtubule growth. As microtubules grow, GTP is hydrolyzed to GDP, resulting in a GDP-bound state in the tubulin dimers further down the microtubule. This GTP hydrolysis is essential for the dynamic instability of microtubules, allowing them to grow and shrink as needed.

TUBB6 is also known as FPVEPD, HsT1601, TUBB-5.
