TSPO

Description

The TSPO (translocator protein) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 22.

TSPO can refer to: Translocator protein, Mitochondrial benzodiazepine receptor, PKBS, Peripheral-type benzodiazepine receptor.

TSPO binds protoporphyrin IX and may be involved in the transport of porphyrins and heme. It facilitates cholesterol transport across mitochondrial membranes and may participate in lipid metabolism, although its exact physiological role remains unclear. Notably, TSPO is not essential for steroid hormone biosynthesis. Originally identified as a peripheral-type benzodiazepine receptor, it can also bind isoquinoline carboxamides.

TSPO is also known as BPBS, BZRP, DBI, IBP, MBR, PBR, PBS, PKBS, PTBR, TSPO1, mDRC, pk18.
