TRDMT1

Description

The TRDMT1 (tRNA aspartic acid methyltransferase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 10.

TRDMT1 gene encodes a protein with similarity to DNA methyltransferases. While the protein does not exhibit methyltransferase activity, it strongly binds DNA, suggesting a potential role in marking specific genomic sequences. The gene's alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. While initially thought to be involved in DNA methylation, it has been established that TRDMT1, also known as DNMT2, methylates cytosine 38 in the anticodon loop of aspartic acid transfer RNA (tRNA(Asp)) instead of DNA.

TRDMT1 specifically methylates cytosine 38 in the anticodon loop of tRNA(Asp) (PubMed:16424344). It demonstrates higher activity on tRNA(Asp) modified with queuosine at position 34 (PubMed:30093495).

TRDMT1 is also known as DMNT2, DNMT2, MHSAIIP, PUMET, RNMT1.
