TP53 Gene: Guardian of the Genome

Description

The TP53 gene holds a pivotal role in safeguarding our genetic integrity. It encodes the tumor protein p53, a vital protein responsible for monitoring the health of our cells. p53 acts as a tumor suppressor, diligently checking for DNA damage and other cellular abnormalities that could lead to uncontrolled cell growth.

Upon detecting cellular stress or DNA damage, p53 swings into action. It triggers a series of cellular responses, including DNA repair, cell cycle arrest to allow for repair, and if necessary, apoptosis or programmed cell death. This ability to eliminate damaged cells prevents their propagation into cancerous cells.
