TOMM20

Description

The TOMM20 (translocase of outer mitochondrial membrane 20) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

The TOMM20 gene encodes the TOM20 protein, which is a key component of the TOM complex located in the outer mitochondrial membrane. The TOM complex is responsible for importing proteins into the mitochondria. TOM20 acts as a receptor, recognizing and binding to the N-terminal MTS (matrix-targeting sequences) of proteins destined for the mitochondrial matrix. This interaction allows the protein to be transported through the TOM40 pore, which is another component of the TOM complex, and ultimately into the mitochondrial matrix.

TOMM20 is a key component of the receptor complex responsible for recognizing and transporting proteins destined for the mitochondria. It collaborates with TOM22 to act as the transit peptide receptor on the mitochondrial outer membrane, guiding proteins into the TOM40 translocation pore. TOMM20 is essential for the movement of cytochrome P450 monooxygenases across the mitochondrial outer membrane.

TOMM20 is also known as MAS20, MOM19, TOM20.
