TNRC6A
Description
The TNRC6A (trinucleotide repeat containing adaptor 6A) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.
TNRC6A is a protein encoded by the TNRC6A gene in humans. It belongs to the trinucleotide repeat containing 6 protein family and plays a crucial role in post-transcriptional gene silencing through the RNA interference (RNAi) and microRNA pathways. TNRC6A associates with messenger RNAs and Argonaute proteins in cytoplasmic bodies known as GW-bodies or P-bodies. Inhibition of TNRC6A expression disrupts the localization of other GW-body proteins and impairs RNAi and microRNA-induced gene silencing.
TNRC6A plays a key role in RNA-mediated gene silencing, involving both microRNAs (miRNAs) and short interfering RNAs (siRNAs). It is essential for miRNA-dependent repression of translation, and siRNA-dependent endonucleolytic cleavage of complementary mRNAs by argonaute family proteins. Functioning as a scaffolding protein, TNRC6A associates with argonaute proteins bound to partially complementary mRNAs, and can simultaneously recruit CCR4-NOT and PAN deadenylase complexes.
