TNFAIP8

Description

The TNFAIP8 (TNF alpha induced protein 8) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.

TNFAIP8, encoded by the TNFAIP8 gene, is a protein primarily found in human immune cells. It is induced by tumor necrosis factor alpha and is involved in regulating cell death.

TNFAIP8 acts as a negative mediator of apoptosis and potentially contributes to tumor progression. It inhibits TNF-mediated apoptosis by blocking caspase-8 activity, but not the processing of procaspase-8, thereby preventing BID cleavage and caspase-3 activation. This function is supported by evidence from multiple studies (PubMed:10644768, PubMed:11346652, PubMed:14724590).

TNFAIP8 is also known as GG2-1, MDC-3.13, NDED, SCC-S2, SCCS2.
