TMSB4X

Description

The TMSB4X (thymosin beta 4 X-linked) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome X.

TMSB4X encodes thymosin beta-4, a protein consisting of 43 amino acids with a molecular weight of 4921 g/mol. It is a major cellular constituent found in various tissues. Thymosin beta-4 is known for its role in regulating actin polymerization by sequestering actin monomers. This gene escapes X inactivation and has a homolog on chromosome Y (TMSB4Y). Although its gene ablation in mice does not significantly affect embryonic development or fertility, the biological functions of thymosin beta-4 are still under investigation.

Plays an important role in the organization of the cytoskeleton (PubMed:1999398, PubMed:10848969). Binds to and sequesters actin monomers (G actin) and therefore inhibits actin polymerization (PubMed:1999398, PubMed:10848969). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10848969, ECO:0000269|PubMed:1999398}

TMSB4X is also known as FX, PTMB4, TB4X, TMSB4.
