Description
The TMEM242 (transmembrane protein 242) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.
TMEM242, also known as C6orf35, BM033, and UPF0463 Transmembrane Protein C6orf35, is a protein encoded by the TMEM242 gene located on chromosome 6. The gene is 35,238 base pairs long and encodes a 141 amino acid protein containing a DUF1358 domain. While the exact function of TMEM242 is not fully understood, it is known to interact with MAP2K1IP1, a scaffold protein involved in the MAP Kinase pathway. TMEM242 has been implicated in mitochondrial ATP synthase assembly, specifically the c-ring formation. Its role is to facilitate membrane insertion and oligomerization of the subunit c/ATP5MC3, which forms the c-ring. It is also involved in the incorporation of the c-ring into vestigial complexes. Additionally, it influences the incorporation of subunits MT-ATP6, MT-ATP8, ATP5MJ, and ATP5MK into the ATP synthase. TMEM242 interacts with the core subunits NDUFAF1, ECSIT, and ACAD9 of the MCIA complex, as well as with ATP5MC3, NDUFC2, TMEM70, MT-ND2, and MT-ND3.
