TMC2

Description

The TMC2 (transmembrane channel like 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 20.

TMC2 is a protein encoded by the TMC2 gene in humans. It is part of a gene family that encodes transmembrane proteins. While its exact function is unknown, its expression in the inner ear suggests a crucial role in auditory function. Mutations in TMC2 may be linked to hereditary disorders affecting balance and hearing.

TMC2 is a probable ion channel essential for the proper function of cochlear hair cells. It plays a crucial role in the mechanotransduction (MET) machinery of hair cells, enabling them to respond to mechanical stimuli.

TMC2 is also known as C20orf145.
