TIMM21

Description

The TIMM21 (translocase of inner mitochondrial membrane 21) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 18.

TIMM21 plays a crucial role in the import of proteins into mitochondria. It assists in transporting proteins with transit peptides across the inner mitochondrial membrane. Additionally, TIMM21 is essential for the assembly of mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes I and IV. It is a component of the MITRAC (mitochondrial translation regulation assembly intermediate of cytochrome c oxidase complex) complex, which helps to integrate early nuclear-encoded subunits into these complexes. TIMM21 likely shuttles between the presequence translocase and respiratory-chain assembly intermediates, facilitating this integration process.

TIMM21 is also known as C18orf55, HSPC154, TIM21.
