THEM4

Description

The THEM4 (thioesterase superfamily member 4) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

THEM4 is an acyl-CoA thioesterase that breaks down medium and long-chain fatty acids (C14 to C18). It is likely involved in mitochondrial fatty acid metabolism. THEM4 also affects programmed cell death (apoptosis) through its regulation of AKT1 activity. Research suggests that THEM4 can both inhibit and enhance AKT1 activity, depending on the context. For example, it has been shown to inhibit AKT1 phosphorylation and activity (PubMed:11598301), but also to enhance AKT1 activity by promoting its phosphorylation and translocation to the cell membrane (PubMed:17615157).

THEM4 is also known as CTMP.
