TFF2

Description

The TFF2 (trefoil factor 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 21.

Trefoil factor 2 is a protein encoded by the TFF2 gene in humans. It belongs to the trefoil family, characterized by a 40-amino acid domain containing three conserved disulfides. These proteins are secreted in the gastrointestinal mucosa and may protect it from damage, stabilize the mucus layer, and promote epithelial healing. Trefoil factor 2 specifically inhibits gastric acid secretion. The TFF2 gene is located on chromosome 21 alongside two other related genes. Trefoil factors are lectins that bind to the disaccharide GlcNAc-α-1,4-Gal, found on mucins in the mucosa. This binding allows them to modulate the thickness and viscosity of the mucus by cross-linking mucins.

TFF2 is also known as SML1, SP.
