TFF1

Description

The TFF1 (trefoil factor 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 21.

Trefoil factor 1 is a protein encoded by the TFF1 gene (also called pS2 gene) in humans. It is part of the trefoil family, known for their trefoil motif, a 40-amino acid domain with three conserved disulfide bonds. These proteins are secreted by the gastrointestinal mucosa and may play a role in protecting the mucosa from damage, stabilizing the mucus layer, and promoting healing. TFF1 is expressed in the gastric mucosa and has been studied for its association with human tumors. The TFF1 gene is located on chromosome 21, along with two other related genes. TFF1 interacts with a specific disaccharide found on mucins, altering the thickness and viscosity of mucus. TFF1 expression is often lost in gastric carcinoma, suggesting it may act as a tumor suppressor gene.

TFF1 is also known as BCEI, D21S21, HP1.A, HPS2, pNR-2, pS2.
