Tetrabenazine
Description
Tetrabenazine is a medication used to treat involuntary movements associated with Huntington's disease and other movement disorders. It works by blocking the action of dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in controlling movement. Tetrabenazine is typically prescribed for people with Huntington's disease who experience chorea (uncontrolled, jerky movements), and it may also be helpful in reducing other movement symptoms, such as dystonia (muscle spasms) and akathisia (restlessness). The drug is available as oral capsules and is usually taken two to three times a day. It is important to note that tetrabenazine can cause side effects, including drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, and depression. It is also important to consult with a doctor before taking tetrabenazine, as it may interact with other medications.
