Description

The TERF1 (telomeric repeat binding factor 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 8.

TERF1 is a human protein encoded by the TERF1 gene, located on chromosome 8. It functions as a component of the shelterin complex, which protects telomeres, the ends of chromosomes, from degradation and inappropriate processing by DNA repair mechanisms. TERF1 is involved in regulating telomere length, inhibiting telomerase activity, and protecting telomeres from being recognized as DNA damage. It is present at telomeres throughout the cell cycle and plays a role in the regulation of the mitotic spindle. TERF1 also interacts with various proteins, including ATM, TINF2, TNKS1, TNKS2, PINX1, NEK2, and MAPRE1.

TERF1 binds to the double-stranded 5'-TTAGGG-3' repeat sequence at telomeres, preventing excessive telomere lengthening. It also plays a role in regulating the mitotic spindle, ensuring proper chromosome segregation during cell division.

TERF1 is also known as PIN2, TRBF1, TRF, TRF1, hTRF1-AS, t-TRF1.
