Description
The TARBP1 (TAR (HIV-1) RNA binding protein 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.
TARBP1 is an enzyme encoded by the TARBP1 gene in humans. It plays a role in regulating the transcription of the HIV-1 virus. HIV-1 utilizes an RNA genome that is converted into DNA during its replication cycle. The transactivator Tat protein activates HIV-1 gene expression by interacting with a regulatory element called TAR, located downstream of the transcription start site. TAR forms a stable stem-loop structure and can bind to TARBP1 or RNA polymerase II. TARBP1 might be involved in detaching RNA polymerase II from TAR during transcriptional elongation. The gene produces multiple transcripts through alternative splicing, but their complete sequences are unknown.
TARBP1 is a probable S-adenosyl-L-methionine-dependent methyltransferase that modifies RNA molecules like tRNAs.
