TAF12


Description

The TAF12 (TATA-box binding protein associated factor 12) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

TAF12 (Transcription initiation factor TFIID subunit 12) is a protein involved in controlling transcription by RNA polymerase II. It is part of the basal transcription machinery, a collection of proteins that assemble with RNA polymerase II to form complexes regulated by transactivator proteins. TAF12 interacts directly with TBP (TATA-box-binding protein) and TAF2I, and it has been shown to interact with TAF9 and Transcription initiation protein SPT3 homolog. Different TAFs are believed to mediate the function of various transcriptional activators for different gene promoters and RNA polymerases.

TAF12 is a subunit of the TFIID complex, which plays a crucial role in initiating transcription by RNA polymerase II. TFIID binds to promoters, with or without a TATA box, through its subunit TBP (TATA-box-binding protein), facilitating the formation of the pre-initiation complex (PIC). TAF12 is also found in the TATA-binding protein-free TAF complex (TFTC), the PCAF histone acetylase complex, and the STAGA transcription coactivator-HAT complex.

TAF12 is also known as TAF2J, TAFII20.
