SYT3

Description

The SYT3 (synaptotagmin 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

Synaptotagmin-3 is a protein encoded by the SYT3 gene in humans.

Synaptotagmin-3 acts as a calcium sensor, crucial for the release of cellular contents (exocytosis) from secretory vesicles. It achieves this by binding to calcium and phospholipids through its C2 domain. This binding, triggered by calcium, anchors the C2 domains to both the phospholipid membranes and assembled SNARE complexes, ultimately facilitating exocytosis. Additionally, Synaptotagmin-3 plays a role in the development of dendrites in melanocytes, the cells responsible for skin pigmentation.

SYT3 is also known as SytIII.
