SUMF2
Description
The SUMF2 (sulfatase modifying factor 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.
SUMF2 is an enzyme encoded by the SUMF2 gene in humans. It is involved in the activation of sulfatases, a group of enzymes that break down sulfated molecules. Sulfatase activity requires a unique amino acid, C-alpha-formylglycine (FGly), which is generated from cysteine through a post-translational modification. SUMF2 belongs to the sulfatase-modifying factor family and contains a DUF323 domain. It localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum lumen. While SUMF2 has low levels of FGly-generating activity, it can form heterodimers with another family member that possesses high FGly-generating activity. Multiple isoforms of SUMF2 are produced through alternative splicing.
SUMF2 lacks formylglycine-generating activity and cannot activate newly synthesized inactive sulfatases. It inhibits the activation of sulfatases by SUMF1.
