The SULF1 (sulfatase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 8.
SULF1, also known as Sulfatase 1, is an enzyme encoded by the SULF1 gene in humans. Heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) are important co-receptors for many growth factors and cytokines involved in cell signaling. SULF1 is a heparan sulfate 6-O-endo-sulfatase that specifically removes 6-O-sulfate groups from heparan sulfate. This activity alters the binding sites for signaling molecules, modifying the effects of heparan sulfate. HSPGs are crucial regulators of cell signaling pathways involved in cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, and migration. They are found in most tissues and are essential for cell communication. The sulfation pattern of the heparan sulfate chains, which is dynamic and context-specific, plays a key role in these signaling processes.
