STARD5

Description

The STARD5 (StAR related lipid transfer domain containing 5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 15.

STARD5 is a protein encoded by the STARD5 gene. It consists primarily of a START domain and is closely related to STARD4. STARD5 is most abundant in the kidneys and liver, where it is found in Kupffer cells. It binds to both cholesterol and 25-hydroxycholesterol. STARD5 likely functions in redistributing cholesterol to the endoplasmic reticulum, where it associates with the protein, and/or to the plasma membrane. Increasing levels of STARD5 lead to an increase in free cholesterol in the cell. Cholesterol homeostasis is regulated by factors like SREBP1 and LXRA, which control the production and uptake of cholesterol. Sterol transport involves vesicles or proteins like STAR, which is related to STARD5 and part of the START domain family.
