ST6GALNAC3

Description

The ST6GALNAC3 (ST6 N-acetylgalactosaminide alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

ST6GALNAC3 catalyzes the transfer of a sialyl group (N-acetyl-alpha-neuraminyl or NeuAc) from CMP-NeuAc to the GalNAc residue on the NeuAc-alpha-2,3-Gal-beta-1,3-GalNAc sequence of glycoproteins and glycolipids, forming an alpha-2,6-linkage. This results in the creation of branched type disialyl structures by transferring a sialyl group onto a GalNAc residue within the backbone core chains. ST6GALNAC3 exhibits a preference for glycolipids over glycoproteins, primarily catalyzing the biosynthesis of ganglioside GD1alpha from GM1b. GD1alpha plays a crucial role in the communication and interaction between neuronal cells and their supportive cells, particularly within brain tissues, and acts as an adhesion molecule during metastasis. Sialylation of glycoproteins or glycosphingolipids holds significant importance in tumor development, neuronal development, nerve repair, immunological processes, and the regulation of hormone sensitivity.

ST6GALNAC3 is also known as PRO7177, SIAT7C, ST6GALNACIII, STY.
