ST6GAL1

Description

The ST6GAL1 (ST6 beta-galactoside alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.

ST6GAL1 encodes beta-galactoside alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase 1, an enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of sialic acid from CMP-sialic acid to galactose-containing substrates. This type II membrane protein is normally found in the Golgi but can be proteolytically processed into a soluble form. ST6GAL1 is involved in generating cell-surface carbohydrate determinants and differentiation antigens HB-6, CDw75, and CD76. It belongs to glycosyltransferase family 29. Three transcript variants encoding two isoforms have been identified for this gene. ST6GAL1 transcripts are found in mouse high endothelial cells of mesenteric lymph node and Peyer's patches, potentially contributing to B cell homing to Peyer's patches. Expression of ST6GAL1 is upregulated in various cancers and is implicated in cancer survival and metastasis.

ST6GAL1 is also known as CDw75, SIAT1, ST6GalI, ST6N.
