SPDL1

Description

The SPDL1 (spindle apparatus coiled-coil protein 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.

SPDL1 is essential for the correct positioning of dynein and dynactin at the mitotic kinetochore. Dynein plays a crucial role in initiating the interaction between the kinetochore and spindle microtubules, paving the way for the formation of stable end-on connections mediated by the NDC80 complex. SPDL1 also contributes to proper spindle orientation. Notably, SPDL1's role does not extend to the removal of spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) proteins from the kinetochore following bipolar spindle attachment. SPDL1 functions as an adapter protein, connecting the dynein motor complex to various cargos. In the presence of dynactin, SPDL1 transforms dynein from a non-processive motor into a highly processive one, enabling efficient movement along microtubules. SPDL1 also facilitates the interaction between dynein and dynactin, further enhancing dynein's processivity. SPDL1 is implicated in cell migration.

SPDL1 is also known as CCDC99.
