Description
The SOS1 (SOS Ras/Rac guanine nucleotide exchange factor 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.
The SOS1 gene is responsible for producing a protein that regulates the RAS/MAPK signaling pathway. This pathway controls crucial cellular functions, including cell growth and division, cell maturation, cell movement, and programmed cell death. SOS1 specifically regulates Ras, a protein that stimulates cell growth and division. Tight control of this process by SOS1 is essential for normal development, particularly during embryonic stages.
SOS1 promotes the exchange of GDP bound to Ras for GTP. This activation of Ras leads to the phosphorylation of MAP kinase MAPK3 in response to EGF. SOS1 is also a catalytic component of a trimeric complex that participates in signal transduction from Ras to Rac by promoting the Rac-specific guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) activity.
