SNRPA

Description

The SNRPA (small nuclear ribonucleoprotein polypeptide A) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

U1 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein A is a protein encoded by the SNRPA gene in humans.

SNRPA is a crucial component of the U1 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP), which plays a vital role in recognizing the 5' splice site of pre-messenger RNA (pre-mRNA) during splicing. This recognition is essential for the subsequent assembly of the spliceosome, a complex responsible for removing introns from pre-mRNA. U1 snRNP is the first snRNP to interact with pre-mRNA, setting the stage for the binding of U2 snRNP and the U4/U6/U5 tri-snRNP. SNRPA specifically binds to stem loop II of U1 snRNA. In a snRNP-free form, SNRPA (SF-A) might participate in the coupled process of pre-mRNA splicing and polyadenylation. It is believed that SNRPA exhibits a preference for binding to the 5'-UGCAC-3' motif on RNA molecules.

SNRPA is also known as Mud1, U1-A, U1A.
