SMPD2

Description

The SMPD2 (sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

Sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase 2 is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the SMPD2 gene.

SMPD2 catalyzes the hydrolysis of sphingomyelin to form ceramide and phosphocholine, both in vitro and in vivo. It also hydrolyzes 1-O-alkyl-2-lyso-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (lyso-platelet-activating factor) and acts on 1-acyl-2-lyso-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (lyso-PC) and sphingosylphosphocholine.

SMPD2 is also known as ISC1, NSMASE, NSMASE1.
