SMG7

Description

The SMG7 (SMG7 nonsense mediated mRNA decay factor) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

SMG7 is a protein encoded by the SMG7 gene in humans. It plays a vital role in the regulation of mRNA stability and degradation.

SMG7 plays a key role in nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD), a cellular surveillance pathway that eliminates mRNAs containing premature termination codons. It recruits UPF1, a central NMD factor, to cytoplasmic mRNA decay bodies, facilitating mRNA degradation. SMG7, in conjunction with SMG5, acts as a bridge to connect the mRNA degradation machinery, specifically exonucleolytic pathways, with UPF1. It also serves as an adapter to link UPF1 with protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), triggering UPF1 dephosphorylation.

SMG7 is also known as C1orf16, EST1C, SGA56M.
