Description

The SMARCC1 (SWI/SNF related, matrix associated, actin dependent regulator of chromatin subfamily c member 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.

SMARCC1 is a protein encoded by the SMARCC1 gene in humans. It belongs to the SWI/SNF family, which possess helicase and ATPase activities. These proteins are thought to regulate gene transcription by altering the chromatin structure around specific genes. SMARCC1 is part of the SWI/SNF complex, a large ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling complex. It contains a leucine zipper motif, a common feature in transcription factors. SMARCC1 interacts with various proteins including BAZ1B, ING1, SIN3A, SMARCA2, SMARCA4, and SMARCB1.

SMARCC1 is involved in regulating gene expression by altering chromatin structure. It is a component of SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complexes, which use ATP to modify DNA-histone interactions within nucleosomes. SMARCC1 can stimulate the ATPase activity of the catalytic subunit within these complexes. SMARCC1 is part of both the neural progenitor-specific chromatin remodeling complex (npBAF) and the neuron-specific chromatin remodeling complex (nBAF). During neural development, a switch occurs from npBAF to nBAF as neurons exit the cell cycle and mature. This switch involves the exchange of specific subunits, with npBAF containing ACTL6A/BAF53A and PHF10/BAF45A, and nBAF containing ACTL6B/BAF53B and DPF1/BAF45B or DPF3/BAF45C. The npBAF complex is crucial for the self-renewal and proliferation of neural stem cells, while nBAF, along with CREST, plays a role in regulating genes involved in dendrite growth.
