Description

The SMAD5 gene, located on chromosome 4q25, encodes a protein that plays a pivotal role in the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) signaling pathway. TGF-β signaling governs a wide range of cellular processes, including differentiation, proliferation, apoptosis, and migration.

SMAD5 belongs to the SMAD family of transcription factors, which act as downstream mediators of TGF-β signaling. TGF-β ligands bind to cell surface receptors, triggering the phosphorylation of SMAD2 and SMAD3. These phosphorylated SMADs then bind to SMAD4 and translocate into the nucleus, where they regulate gene expression.
