SLC8A2

Description

The SLC8A2 (solute carrier family 8 member A2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

SLC8A2 mediates the exchange of calcium (Ca(2+)) ions for sodium (Na(+)) ions across cell membranes, influencing the concentration of calcium within cells. This process plays a key role in regulating calcium-dependent cell functions. It's particularly important in excitable cells, contributing to the quick return of calcium levels to normal after neuronal activity. This regulation impacts synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory formation. SLC8A2 also participates in controlling the excretion of calcium and sodium in urine.

SLC8A2 is also known as NCX2.
