SLC7A10

Description

The SLC7A10 (solute carrier family 7 member 10) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

SLC7A10, also known as Asc-type amino acid transporter 1 (Asc-1), is a protein involved in the transport of amino acids. It is encoded by the SLC7A10 gene in humans.

SLC7A10 forms a complex with SLC3A2/4F2hc, enabling the transport of small, neutral L- and D-amino acids across cell membranes. This transport primarily occurs through exchange, but facilitated diffusion is also possible. SLC7A10 is a crucial transporter of glycine, L-serine, and D-serine within the central nervous system. In the spinal cord and brainstem, SLC7A10 regulates glycine metabolism and inhibitory neurotransmission by facilitating glycine synthesis from L-serine and recycling glycine from astrocytes to motor neurons. At synapses in the brain, SLC7A10 releases D-serine and glycine, modulating NMDA receptor activation and excitatory glutamatergic transmission. SLC7A10 may also regulate D-serine release from developing adipose tissue, favoring the formation of white adipocytes over beige adipocytes.

SLC7A10 is also known as ASC1, HASC-1, asc-1.
