SLC5A12

Description

The SLC5A12 (solute carrier family 5 member 12) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

SLC5A12 acts as an electroneutral and low-affinity sodium (Na+)-dependent transporter that moves various monocarboxylates across the plasma membrane. These include lactate, pyruvate, nicotinate, propionate, butyrate, and beta-D-hydroxybutyrate. This transport activity is thought to play a crucial role in the initial reabsorption of monocarboxylates from the kidney's proximal tubule and the small intestine. Additionally, SLC5A12 may be involved in monocarboxylate transport in the retina.

SLC5A12 is also known as SMCT2.
