SLC5A11

Description

The SLC5A11 (solute carrier family 5 member 11) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.

SLC5A11, also known as Sodium/myo-inositol cotransporter 2, is a protein involved in the transport of myo-inositol across cell membranes. It plays a critical role in the absorption of myo-inositol in the intestines and may also be involved in regulating myo-inositol levels in the blood.

SLC5A11 transports myo-inositol (MI) across cell membranes in a sodium-dependent manner, with a 2:1 ratio of sodium to MI. It is the primary transporter responsible for apical MI absorption in the intestines. Additionally, SLC5A11 can transport D-chiro-inositol (DCI) but not L-fucose. It also exhibits stereospecific cotransport of both D-glucose and D-xylose. SLC5A11 may induce apoptosis through the TNF-alpha, PDCD1 pathway. It is thought to play a role in regulating MI concentration in serum, potentially through reabsorption in the proximal tubule of the kidney.

SLC5A11 is also known as KST1, RKST1, SGLT6, SMIT2.
