SLC48A1

Description

The SLC48A1 (solute carrier family 48 member 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

SLC48A1, also known as heme transporter HRG1 or heme-responsive gene 1 protein homolog, plays a crucial role in regulating intracellular heme availability within the endosomal or lysosomal compartment. In macrophages of the reticuloendothelial system, it acts as the heme transporter for heme-iron recycling. This function is vital for maintaining macrophage iron homeostasis, as SLC48A1 facilitates the transport of heme from the phagolysosome to the cytoplasm during erythrophagocytosis (EP).

SLC48A1 is also known as HRG, HRG-1, HRG1, hHRG-1.
