SLC39A2

Description

The SLC39A2 (solute carrier family 39 member 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 14.

SLC39A2 is a gene that encodes a protein called zinc transporter ZIP2. This protein is responsible for transporting zinc into cells.

SLC39A2 is a zinc transporter that mediates the influx of zinc (Zn2+) into cells from the extracellular space. The transport activity is independent of H+ driving force but is modulated by extracellular pH and membrane potential. SLC39A2 also transports other divalent cations such as cadmium (Cd2+), copper (Cu2+), and cobalt (Co2+) with decreasing affinity. In the skin, SLC39A2 contributes to the differentiation of keratinocytes in the epidermis.

SLC39A2 is also known as 6A1, ETI-1, ZIP-2, ZIP2.
