SLC30A3
Description
The SLC30A3 (solute carrier family 30 member 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.
SLC30A3, also known as Zinc transporter 3 or solute carrier family 30 member 3, is a protein encoded by the SLC30A3 gene in humans. The SLC30A3 gene codes for the ZnT-3 SLC30A family membrane transport protein. ZnT-3 is crucial for the accumulation of zinc ions within synaptic vesicles. In mice, ZnT-3 is essential for certain forms of memory dependent on the hippocampus and amygdala. Zinc transport mediated by ZnT-3 regulates memory formation by influencing the extracellular signal-regulated kinases signaling pathway. The senescence of vascular smooth muscle cells induced by Angiotensin II requires the down-regulation of ZnT-3 and ZnT-10.
SLC30A3 is a probable proton-coupled zinc ion antiporter that mediates the import of zinc from the cytoplasm into synaptic vesicles. It also plays a role in maintaining zinc ion homeostasis in the brain. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17349999, ECO:0000269|PubMed:19521526, ECO:0000269|PubMed:26647834}
SLC30A3 is also known as ZNT3.
