SLC27A6

Description

The SLC27A6 (solute carrier family 27 member 6) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.

SLC27A6 encodes a member of the fatty acid transport protein family (FATP) involved in the uptake of long-chain fatty acids. FATPs have unique expression patterns, and alternative splicing of the SLC27A6 gene can produce different transcripts encoding the same protein.

SLC27A6, also known as FATP6, plays a crucial role in the import of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) into cells. It facilitates this transport at the plasma membrane. Additionally, SLC27A6 functions as an acyl-CoA ligase, catalyzing the formation of fatty acyl-CoA from LCFA and very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA) using ATP. This enzyme is particularly important in tissues like the heart, where it regulates the availability of LCFA substrates from external sources for beta-oxidation.

SLC27A6 is also known as ACSVL2, FACVL2, FATP6, VLCS-H1.
