The SLC1A6 (solute carrier family 1 member 6) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.
SLC1A6, also known as Excitatory amino acid transporter 4 (EAAT4), is a protein primarily expressed in the cerebellum. It exhibits a high affinity for the excitatory amino acids L-aspartate and L-glutamate. When stimulated by these amino acids, EAAT4 facilitates the transport of chloride ions.
SLC1A6, also known as Excitatory amino acid transporter 4 (EAAT4) or Sodium-dependent glutamate/aspartate transporter, is a high-affinity amino acid transporter that mediates the uptake of L-glutamate, L-aspartate, and D-aspartate. It functions as a symporter, transporting one amino acid molecule along with two or three sodium ions (Na+) and one proton (H+), while simultaneously counter-transporting one potassium ion (K+). This transporter also facilitates chloride ion (Cl-) flux independently of amino acid transport, preventing the buildup of negative charges due to aspartate and Na+ symport. SLC1A6 plays a redundant role in the rapid removal of released glutamate from the synaptic cleft, a process crucial for terminating the postsynaptic action of glutamate.
