SLC16A5

Description

The SLC16A5 (solute carrier family 16 member 5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

SLC16A5 encodes a protein that belongs to the monocarboxylate transporter family and the major facilitator superfamily. This protein is located on the cell membrane and functions as a proton-linked transporter for bumetanide. Its transport activity is inhibited by several compounds, including four loop diuretics, nateglinide, thiazides, probenecid, and glibenclamide. Alternative splicing processes generate multiple transcript variants of this gene.

This protein acts as a proton-linked transporter, facilitating the rapid movement of various monocarboxylates, including lactate, pyruvate, branched-chain oxo acids (derived from leucine, valine, and isoleucine), and ketone bodies (acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetate), across the plasma membrane.

SLC16A5 is also known as MCT5, MCT6.
