SLC16A4

Description

The SLC16A4 (solute carrier family 16 member 4) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

SLC16A4 gene in humans encodes the protein Monocarboxylate transporter 5.

SLC16A4 encodes a protein that acts as a proton-linked monocarboxylate transporter. This transporter rapidly facilitates the movement of various monocarboxylates across the plasma membrane. These include lactate, pyruvate, branched-chain oxo acids derived from leucine, valine, and isoleucine, and the ketone bodies acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetate.

SLC16A4 is also known as MCT4, MCT5.
