SKA1

Description

The SKA1 (spindle and kinetochore associated complex subunit 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 18.

SKA1 is a component of the SKA1 complex, a microtubule-binding subcomplex of the outer kinetochore. This complex plays a crucial role in proper chromosome segregation during cell division. SKA1 is essential for the timely onset of anaphase, the stage where chromosomes are pulled apart. It facilitates the movement of chromosomes towards opposite poles of the cell by interacting with microtubules and regulating their depolymerization. This process ensures that each daughter cell receives a complete set of chromosomes. SKA1's interaction with microtubules is further enhanced by the presence of the ndc-80 complex, which allows the complex to track depolymerizing microtubules, further contributing to accurate chromosome segregation.

SKA1 is also known as C18orf24.
